I'm Jennifer Ennis, a software engineer in the DC metro area. This is my blog about programming, greyhounds, photography, art, math, books, or anything else that suits my fancy at any given time.
I like to keep greyhounds in pairs because they always seem happier that way. My boy, Batou, passed away a few weeks ago. Major was fussy about eating the first couple of weeks afterward, and she’s noticeably more clingy lately. So, on May 21st a new 2 year old dog named Bogardus “Bo” is making the trip up from Orlando.
Bogardus is his actual racing name, and for some reason I kinda like it, so I’ll keep it. They often have really long weird names, e.g. Major’s racing name is AMF Casino Cruze. I did a bit of googling to try and discern his namesake. At first, I thought it was a star, because that’s what the wikipedia entry for Bogardus links to. However, it doesn’t seem to be a very important star, and he didn’t have any siblings with star names, so that didn’t really make sense.
I’m pretty sure he’s named after Capt. A. H. Bogardus. tl;dr: world champion trap shooter from the 1800’s. He improved the european glass ball and trap, performed epic feats of endurance, and traveled around demonstrating and promoting the clay pigeon.
I approve of this name. I’ve only been trapshooting once, at The Homestead, and I kinda sucked, and they gave me the littlest wimpy shotgun they had (although it was pretty), but it was fun anyway.
